A nerve-racking drama set in an apartment building where the law no longer applies and each tenant must create their own rules in order to survive. The film captures a unique affair of tenants rebelling against the oppression and bullying systematically perpetrated on them by the unscrupulous landlord.
This documentary western presents a detailed study of the background of the business of poverty, focusing on so-called predatory houses. One of these, the infamous Brno apartment building called "Kuncovka", becomes the setting for a many years long time-lapse drama.
The struggle for living conditions in which at least basic human rights are respected gradually brings the residents of the hostel and the people who try to help them into borderline and even hopeless situations. It gradually becomes clear that this is not just a battle with the owner, but with the entire system of public institutions that allows his actions. Justice cannot be sought in a dysfunctional system. The tenants of the hostel must accept the bitter consequences that their struggle for a dignified life has ultimately brought them.
The movie thematically follows on from the author's previous time-lapse documentary Housing Against Everyone, with which it forms a film diptych about the society-wide housing crisis and its consequences.
"When I first set foot in that house, I came hard up against the gap between theoretical understanding and the real experience of extreme poverty and inequality that plunged the residents' lot into lived hopelessness. I observed a space where defending one's own rights, let alone human dignity, is so expensive and dangerous that claiming it is tantamount to existential endangerment of self and family. At Kuncovka, I learned that to be poor is to become a commodity of abuse that no one wants to hear, because poverty is itself a guilt. It was not the way to turn your head and pretend this world doesn't exist." - Tomáš Hlaváček
